Umno woos Malay base with canings and imprisonment

What do you think of the recent flexing of muscle by the syariah courts in dealing with 'deviant'Muslims'.

The latest highlight is the jailing of two media members for preparing to have unlawful sex. In this case, the Shah Alam Syariah High Court today (March 3) fined TV9 assistant producer Roslan Abd Rahman, 45, RM2,000 and handed down a three-month jail term, with an additional one month’s jail if the accused fails to pay the fine.

His parner TV9 broadcast journalist Siti Nor Ain Ahmad Potakon, 24, was sentenced to three months' 'jail' or rehabilitation at the Baitul Ehsan shelter in Sabak Bernam and fined RM1,500, and an additional month’s detention should she fail to pay the fine. Just before this high profile case, three women were jailed and whipped for having unlawful sex.

For long Muslims have been drinking and screwing outside marriage in this country and nobody was whipped or jailed for such offences. Why now?

Many think that Umno is behind the recent series of stiff punishment handed down by the shariah courts on Muslims for drinking in public and indulging in sex outside marriage.

Why? All along Umno has kept the lid on Muslims extremist groups and scantly paying attention to calls to enforce shariah laws. Why now?

It seems that Umno wants to recapture the lost Malay votes which went to the oppostition in the 2008 general election.

Many ultra Malays think that Umno is not doing enough to eitherr empower the syariah or keep unIslamic activities such gambling and drinking joints and rumah uruts under control.

Pas has always blamed Umno for being unlislamic and even called the party members kafir.

So with more Malays leaving Umno and joining Pas and other opposition parties, Umno, the lead coalition partner in the ruling Barisan Nasional party wants to show the Muslims that they are an Islamic party.

Sadly not all Malays are ultras or fanatics who want to see the syariah playing a greater role in Tunku vision of a secular Malaysia.

Many of the younsters today dont whan to be preached to or told what is right and wrong. They despise the way the religious leaders preach to them of morality and good behaviour.

Leaving the Malay aside, let us take the Chinese and Indians' reaction to this new development.

In order to please the ultra Malays, Barisan is blind to the growing resentment among the non-Muslims who dont what to see Malaysia turning into an Islamic state,

As such a large number of Indians the last time around threw their weight behind the opposition

Who are we as mere mortals to decide on gods punishment. If two adults have consentual sex who are we to judge. If an adult have a beer or two who are we as mere mortal to judge. Let god punish them in the here after. A question to all " Did god made man or man made god" Like Samy who said " THIS IS THE ACT OF GOD"
